The take-off lands on the desk and the line reads “wheel stoppers — 1 no. per bay.” So the estimator counts every stall in the park, multiplies by the unit rate, and prices it. Two weeks later the site team is asking why half the units are sitting on pallets with nowhere to go, because the internal bays park nose-to-nose and never needed a stopper at all. The order was built on the wrong number.
Working out how many wheel stoppers a car park needs isn’t the stall count. It’s a smaller, more specific number: the bays that front something a car shouldn’t roll into, plus a breakage spare and the fixings that come with each unit. Get those three right and the order matches the site. Here’s how we count it.
How many wheel stoppers does a car park actually need?
One stopper per bay that fronts a wall, walkway, kerb, planter, or level drop, not every bay in the park. A wheel stopper exists to stop a tyre before the car overhangs something it shouldn’t. Where there’s nothing in front of the bay to protect, there’s nothing for the stopper to do.
That single distinction is where most take-offs go wrong. Picture a standard double-loaded aisle: two rows of bays back onto each other down the middle, with a row against each outside wall. The two perimeter rows front a wall or a walkway, so they get stoppers. The internal bays park nose-to-nose against the opposite row, where a car’s overhang meets another car’s overhang rather than a wall, so they usually get none. On a layout like that you’re stopping roughly half to two-thirds of the bays, not all of them.
So the count starts on the drawing, not the schedule. Walk the layout and mark every bay whose front edge meets a wall, a pedestrian route, a landscaped strip, a column line, or a change in level. That marked number is your unit base. Everything after (spares, fixings, cost) builds on it.
Which bays get a stopper, and which don’t?
Perimeter and hazard-facing bays get one; interior nose-to-nose bays usually don’t. The job is to read the layout bay by bay rather than apply one rule to the whole park.
Bays that need a unit: anything fronting a boundary wall or fence base, a raised walkway, a shopfront, a service riser or column, soft landscaping, or a ramp edge. Bays that usually don’t: internal rows that park against another row of cars, and bays where a continuous kerb upstand already stops the wheel. Two bay types are easy to miss in a count, so handle them explicitly:

- EV charging bays want a stopper set so the bumper stops short of the charger pedestal. A charger is an expensive thing to reverse into, and the stopper is the cheapest guard you’ll fit on that bay.
Whether a wide bay takes one long unit or two short ones is a layout call, not a counting one — we cover that decision in the wheel stopper spec guide. For the order, assume one 1.8m unit per bay unless the drawing says otherwise, then adjust the handful of bays that don’t fit.
How many spare wheel stoppers should you add?
Add roughly 5% on top of the counted units, or a few units on a small job. A precast wheel stopper is a solid 65kg unit, so it rarely fails in service. But one gets chipped on offload, or a delivery truck clips it, or a driver reverses hard into one over the park’s life. A small spare allowance covers all three.
The spare isn’t padding for a loose count. It’s there so a damaged unit gets replaced like-for-like from your own stock instead of triggering a one-off re-order at full delivery cost months later, when the exact length and finish might take longer to match. On a 120-unit order, five or six spares is cheap insurance. On a 20-unit job, two is enough.
How many fixings and how much paint come with that count?
Two fixings per unit, and a finish decision that applies to the whole order. Each precast wheel stopper has two cast-in holes, so the fixing count is simply your unit total times two, ordered as its own line and matched to the surface:

Adhesive-only fixing doesn’t hold in UAE surface heat, so don’t let a “we’ll just glue them” line quietly drop the fixings off your order — every unit needs its two anchors. On finish, decide once: painted yellow/black units read clearly and suit public and retail parks, while plain grey suits back-of-house yards and sits at the lower end of the price band. Paint doesn’t change the count, but it changes the rate you multiply by, so lock it before you price.
What does the whole order cost in AED?
Units run AED 50 to AED 95 each depending on length and finish, so the order cost is the counted units, plus spares, times that rate — fixings and delivery on top. The 2.0m length and the painted yellow/black finish sit at the top of the band; plain grey 1.8m units sit at the bottom.
