A manhole order goes wrong at the cheapest line on the sheet. Someone gets the chamber size right, the depth right, the invert levels right, and then ticks a car-park cover for a chamber that sits in a service road. The cover looks fine on day one. Then a loaded truck tracks over it, the frame rocks in its bedding, the casting cracks, and now there’s a hole in a live road and a rejected inspection. The chamber was never the problem. The lid was.

So here’s the spec that trips people up more than any other on a manhole: the cover class. Get it right and the cover survives the traffic above it for years. Get it wrong and you’re replacing it inside a month, usually after someone has already driven over the failure.

What is a manhole cover load class?

It’s the wheel load a cover and its frame are tested and certified to carry. The class is set by BS EN 124-1:2015, the standard Dubai Municipality, ADM, and DEWA drawings all reference for access covers.

Every class has a test load stated in kilonewtons, and the cover has to pass that load without cracking or taking a permanent set. The number isn’t decorative. A cover in the middle of a carriageway feels the full axle of a loaded truck; a cover on a footpath feels a person and maybe a wheelbarrow. EN 124 splits those two worlds into six classes so you specify the cover for where it actually sits, not for a generic “manhole”.

What are the EN 124 cover classes?

Six classes, running from pedestrian areas to airport pavements. The jump from one class to the next is a real jump in tested load, not a small step.

Read across the table and one thing stands out: a footway cover carries a fraction of a road cover. That gap is exactly where the money gets lost, in both directions. Spec too low and the cover fails. Spec too high and you pay for load capacity a footpath never uses.

Which manhole cover class do I need?

Match the class to the heaviest thing that will ever cross the chamber, not the traffic on an average day. The rule of thumb we give buyers is simple: if a truck can reach it, you’re at D400.

Most confusion sits between three classes. B125 is for footways, pedestrian plazas, and car parks used by cars only, which means no delivery lorries, no bin trucks. C250 covers the awkward strip at the edge of a road, the kerbside and gully line where a wheel might mount but the running traffic doesn’t sit. D400 is the road itself, and it’s the class that Dubai Municipality and RTA drainage drawings call for across trafficked carriageways and most site access roads.

Above that you’re in yard and infrastructure territory. E600 is for docks, container yards, and areas where loaded forklifts or heavy axles run. F900 is airport apron loading, and unless your drawing says aircraft, you don’t need it. When a yard’s traffic is genuinely light, D400 is usually right, and confirming the real wheel loads first saves you paying for E600 you’ll never load.

What happens if you spec the wrong class?

Under-spec cracks the cover; over-spec wastes money. The first one is the dangerous one. A B125 cover rated for 125 kN dropped into a road that puts a 400 kN wheel over it doesn’t just wear out. It fails, and it fails in a live traffic lane, which is a safety incident and a Dubai Municipality inspection failure in one. We’ve been called out to replace car-park covers in service roads more than once, and the replacement always costs more than getting the class right at order stage would have.

Over-spec is only a money problem, but it’s a real one. A heavier class is a heavier, costlier casting, and buying E600 for a pedestrian courtyard is spend with nothing to show for it. The point of EN 124 is to let you pay for exactly the load you have. The chamber sizing and approval decisions sit right alongside this one, and they move the total more than the cover ever does.

How do the chamber and cover get specced together?

They’re one package on the drawing, and we supply them as one. The chamber is cast to BS EN 1917 in C35/45 to C40/50 concrete, typically around 2,100 kg for a standard 1,500 mm section, and the cover class is chosen for the traffic that will pass over the top slab.

That matters because the cover class and the cover slab have to agree. A D400 cover in a frame seated on a slab that wasn’t designed for road loading is only as strong as the weakest part of that stack. When we supply the precast manhole and chamber against your approved drawing, the cover slab, the frame seating, and the certified cover class are matched, so the assembly passes inspection as a unit. The same load-class logic runs through the catch basins and road gullies that feed the network, where the grating class is picked the same way.

Chamber pricing runs from about AED 3,500 to AED 18,000 per unit depending on depth, size, and openings, and the cover class is a small part of that number. Which is the whole point: the cheapest line on the order is the one that fails the loudest when it’s wrong.

What to confirm before you order

Five things settle the cover class and keep the quote right the first time.

  • The location. Footway, car park, kerbside, carriageway, yard, or apron.
  • The heaviest wheel load. The worst vehicle that will ever cross it, including bin trucks and delivery lorries in “pedestrian” areas.
  • The governing class. B125, C250, D400, E600, or F900 per BS EN 124-1:2015, as the drawing states.
  • The chamber spec. Size, depth, and opening positions from the civil layout.
  • The approval body. Dubai Municipality, ADM, DEWA, or the consultant standard the chamber answers to.
