How to read a concrete cube test report before you accept a precast batch: 7-day vs 28-day results, characteristic strength, and BS EN 206 acceptance criteria.
The call comes in the way it always does. A load of barriers is on site, the delivery note is on the bonnet of the truck, and someone hands the site engineer a stapled sheet of numbers and asks him to sign. He glances at it, sees “concrete cube test,” sees a couple of figures that look big enough, and signs. Three weeks later a consultant asks for the compressive strength records for that exact batch, and nobody can say whether the concrete actually made grade.
That sheet is the one document that proves the concrete you’re accepting is the concrete you specified. Read properly, it takes about ninety seconds and tells you whether to sign or hold. Here’s how to read it.
What is a concrete cube test report, and why does it decide acceptance?
It’s the lab record of a batch’s compressive strength: sample cubes cast from the same concrete, cured under controlled conditions, then crushed to see how much load they carry. The report lists each cube’s strength in MPa and sets it against the specified grade.
Everything else on a precast unit is visual. You can see the finish, measure the length, count the lifting points. Strength you cannot see. A 50 MPa jersey barrier and a weak one that never reached grade look identical on the truck. The cube report is the only place the concrete’s real strength shows up as a number, which is why the consultant asks for it and why it’s the sheet that actually matters at handover. How do you read the 7-day and 28-day results?
Read the 28-day result as the pass mark and treat the 7-day figure as an early warning only. Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after it’s cast, so the two numbers answer different questions.
The 7-day cube is a check that the batch is heading the right way. Cement hydration is well along by then but nowhere near finished, and a 7-day result is often only around two-thirds of the eventual 28-day strength, which is already enough for a unit to be handled, delivered, and installed well before the 28-day certificate is issued. If it comes back very low, you’ve caught a problem early, before the units ship. But a healthy 7-day number is not a pass — it’s a good sign, not a signature.
The 28-day cube is the one acceptance rests on. Concrete strength is conventionally specified at 28 days because that’s where the strength gain has slowed to a near-plateau and the grade is defined. When you’re deciding whether to sign, that’s the column your eyes go to. The report should show the test age next to each result, so confirm you’re reading the 28-day rows and not a 7-day early check dressed up as the final figure.
What is characteristic strength, and how does BS EN 206 accept a batch?
Characteristic strength is the value the concrete is expected to beat 95% of the time — not the average — and a batch is accepted when the individual cubes and the set average both clear the conformity rules in BS EN 206.
The “50” in C40/50 is the characteristic cube strength: 50 MPa. That figure already carries a safety margin baked in, because it’s defined so that only about 5% of results are allowed to fall below it. So a properly made batch doesn’t test at exactly 50 — it tests a few MPa above, and that headroom is normal, not over-engineering. Acceptance itself is a two-part check. BS EN 206:2013 (with BS 8500 applying it in practice) asks that the average of a set sits above grade and that no single cube falls too far below it. Here’s what that looks like on a 50 MPa report:

The exact conformity arithmetic is the lab’s and the consultant’s job, and for a US-governed spec the equivalents are ASTM C39 for the crush and cylinders in place of cubes. What you need at acceptance is simpler: does the 28-day set clear grade, and is the weakest cube still within a few MPa of it?
When should a low cube stop you signing?
Stop when a single 28-day cube falls more than about 4 MPa below the characteristic strength, or when the set average is low — either one is a hold-and-investigate, not a sign-off.
For a 50 MPa grade, a lone cube reading 44 or 45 MPa is the classic warning. It might be a bad cube — poor compaction of that one sample, rough handling, a curing slip in the lab rather than a problem in the concrete. But it might be the tip of a weak batch. You don’t resolve that by signing and hoping. You flag it, ask the manufacturer for the full set and the retest position, and let the QA process run. A genuinely low set average is more serious, because it points at the mix rather than one stray sample.
This is where reading the report earns its keep. The engineer who signs a 45 MPa cube on a 50 MPa job because “it’s basically there” has accepted concrete that, on paper, doesn’t conform — and if that unit is ever questioned, the record shows he waved it through. Thirty seconds of reading avoids owning a problem that was never yours to begin with. It’s the same logic behind checking a precast unit properly on delivery: the cheap moment to catch it is before you sign, not after it’s built in.
What should you check on the report before you accept?
Six things, and they take longer to list than to check. Run them and you either sign with confidence or hold with a reason.
- The grade. Confirm the report is judged against the grade your job actually specified — usually C40/50 for road barriers and T-walls.
- The test age. Make sure the acceptance figures are 28-day results, not a 7-day early check.
- The individual cubes. Scan for any single result more than ~4 MPa below grade.
- The set average. Confirm it sits clearly above the characteristic strength.
- The traceability. Batch or pour reference, cast date, and cube ID should tie the report to the units on your delivery note.
- The standard and lab. It should cite BS EN 12390-3 (or ASTM C39) and name an accredited lab — in the UAE, often Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) certification behind the mix.
